On Aug. 28 at the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, hosted by Executive Director Shakia Gullette Warren, Djimon Hounsou, Mayor Danny Avula, Sika Henry, and Black Girls RUN opened Run Richmond 16.19. Max Plank made it possible for VUU students Mekhi McGainey, Brayden Kaminski, Jasmine Jones, Joseph Harris, Jebril Thomas, and Rita Johnson to attend, interview Hounsou, and work the story with Dean’s assistant Valencia Clark and faculty Jasmine Turner, Dean Hollee Freeman, and Mass Comm Prof. CJ Nurse. The race is Sept. 12 at Abner Clay Park.

An HBCU newsroom covering its own city is not a side item on a celebrity calendar. VUU students interviewing Hounsou at the museum is how Richmond’s HBCU puts a cultural race, and 400 years of Black history, on the record before the gun goes off.

Runners and walkers of every age Hounsou invited to the course, VUU students Mekhi McGainey, Brayden Kaminski, Jasmine Jones, Joseph Harris, Jebril Thomas, and Rita Johnson, who put the actor on the record, and a Richmond public that will meet 1619 on the street instead of only in a textbook.
